What is that they are in? I thought at first it was a food container, and that the white rat ate everything and the beige one was thinking, 'Hey!! You took it all.'

Also, the vet care for the foster rats, like Maui and Mulan, is paid for by the rescue, and the vets give the rescue a discount on the usual fees, so that helps, too.

Good question, Paul, because one thing I talk to adopters about is how much vet bills will cost. While it's possible to have a healthy rat who never needs care, it's unusual in my experience. And to put a number on it, according to the Discover Card spending analyzer, I've spent $4763 at the vet in the last year. (This includes some months with the elderly beagle, though, so it's not all rats.)
We tend to adopt older and more special needs rats because we can afford it. We don't have kids, and our pets are our main hobby, so they get our discretionary income. (Between our house and the vet's office is a very nice and expensive neighborhood--I have been known to mention to the animals that if it weren't for them, I could live there.

Excuse me for asking, but how can you afford all these vet bills for the rats? I can't begin to imagine how much you've spent after reading this blog for some time and hearing about all the procedures and check ups.

I love the pictures though I can't imagine what I'd do if one of my two rats got sick
